Schellmann Art web:
A great artist plays with great art -and yet, he stays true to himself: Andy Warhol (1927-1987), the uncrowned king of pop art, who turns everything into a mass icon, an advertising signet, a consumer item, has during the last years of his life used declared highlights of art history from Leonardo to Picasso to create partly monumental silkscreen series. According to the principle "thirty are better than one", the most famous painting of all, repeated 30 times, becomes Mona Lisa Superstar; Goethe by Tischbein, graphically simplified with overstated colors, shows unexpected poster-like qualities; Botticelli´s Venus seems to have just left a beauty farm and lets her magnificent hair blow gently in all shades and colors. Laszlo Glozer refers to this late work by Andy Warhol as a "guest performance in the Olympus of art".
