With its exhibition "Celluloid. Cameraless Film", the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt is presenting an extended promenade through a very special genre of the experimental art film, which has been regaining currency in recent years: the so-called direct film or cameraless film.
Te celluloid filmstrip functions in this process as the direct starting point -as artistic material, interpreted, as it were, as canvas or a sculpturally malleable medium. Artists paint or draw on the individual frames of the transparent film, intervene by direct physical means such as scratching and scraping into the sensitive layer of emulsion on the film, or use technique of collage and photography for their unique, novel creations and interpretations of the cinematic.
