The first of three volumes of collected works, "Ethics" consists of two sections. The first reproduces the summaries Foucault composed for the courses he taught as Professor of History of systems of thought at the Collège de France. These vivid statements of philosophical intent offer considerable insight into Foucault's academic and intellectual schema, revealing a fascination with subjective truth and the power relationships created by control of that truth, and an abiding interest in outsiders, social, sexual and psychological.
The second section consits of various writings and interviews concerned with matters broadly ethical; the role of the intelectual and philosopher in society; the genealogy of ethics; several pieces, including interviews, dealing with the nature of societal judgementes about sexuality; and Foucault's search for a "technology of the self", a way in which one might attain a state of purity, wisdom, or perfection.
