The camera follows modern city dwellers who carry shopping bags with royal grace down the corridors of Versailles. After a while, the contemporary figures are substituted by noblemen in baroque dresses; it is as if time – juxtaposed against the direction of movement through space – is rewinded. Suddenly, inserts of closing doors disturb the scenery. A heavy iron gate blocks the view, only to be opened like a theatre curtain again: the screen is splitted into a tryptich. But the panels are not separated from each other. In contrast, the central section appears to be laid over coherent images, thus inhibiting an exploration of the total sequence.
In this video – a work commissioned by the Centre Pompidou – Odenbach interweaves footage of Versailles, Prisian architecture, urban everyday life and sequences from classical Hollywood melodrama with compositions of Bach, Liszt, Gershwin and Simply Red to a densely knotted reflection about perspective and gaze and their implications for cultural identity, knowledge and power dynamics.
