Better late than never. Sigmar Polke's long-standing invitation to hold an exhibition at the Portikus had to be postponed time and time again.
Once things did finally get off the ground in the summer of 1994, the exhibition was in the capable hands of former Portikus curator Martin Hentschel, an acknowledged authority on the work of Sigmar Polke.
"Laterna Magica", which is the focus of this publication, is central to Sigmar Polke's oeuvre. Strictly speaking, "Laterna Magica" is an installation: it consists of a series of transparent pictures, painted on both sides with different kinds of paint and mounted on freestanding wooden screens, any number of which can be arranged in a variety of configurations.
Few works by Polke have been exhibited as frequently in recent years as his "Laterna Magica". It draws together virtually every aspect of his work: his playful handling of materials, the complexity of his surfaces, spectator involvement, motifs borrowed from folk tales and legends, and the richly layered underlying structure of meanings and associations.
