Writing, words and letters, the names of streets and squares in the East End of London -these dominate Gilbert & George's new series "20 London E1 Pictures". The artist duo has lived and worked in the E1 district for over thirty years. It is a melting-pot of various cultures, a mixture of hip scene and acute poverty, in itself a macrocosm within a microcosm. With rigorous austerity the artists display the names of the places around them on plates designed in contrasting black, white and red. Some of these plates bear a signet consisting of the postcode E1 and the initials of Gilbert & George. In earlier works they also used a kind of royal seal on their invitations, and their signature still looks as though it were printed on a form. "They like the aura of all that is official", the art historian Carter Ratcliff once remarked on this practice. They are also known no like the aura of all that is sexual, and in the "20 London E1 Pictures" a crab-louse, a sexually transmitted parasite, serves as the heraldic beast. [...]
