Sailor; successful stockbroker; South Seas painter; the complex personality and rebellious life-style of Paul Gauguin continue to exercise as great a fascination as his art. In this richly illustrated volume, Michel Hoog charts Gauguin's life from early chilhood to his death in 1903, and docuuments the historical context in which he worked, in order to unravel the complex mesh of influences that helped to mould the artist's unique style.
The cross-currents in Gauguin's artistic milieu are explored in depth, and the author analyzes the challenges offered to the artist by the stale academicism of the Salons, by the well-worm tenets of Impressionism, by the recently discovered art of Japan, and by contemporary innovators such as Degas, seurat and Van Gogh. Michel Hoog places Gauguin in the classical tradition, comparing his works with the paintings of Raphael, Poussin and Delacroix. But he also takes a fresh look at the highly individual qualities which characterize: all Gauguin's work -from his Breton peasant women to his Tahitian "vahines": his graphic stylization of forms, his daring compositional formulae and powerfully original approach to colour, as well as his quest for subjects charged with mysterious symbolism.
Gauguin's writings -including many of his letters- his work in ceramics, his carving and his printing are also explored in this comprehensive study, which offers new insight into every aspect of Gauguin's remarkable "oeuvre".
With over 200 exceptional reproductions -150 in colour- this superbly illustrated volume is unequalled in the breadth of its scope and the depth of its analysis, and will be the essential companion for all admirers of one of France's greatest and most original artists.
