This second film in "The Vancouver Island Quartet" (1991-2002), which Brakhage described as his personal reimagining of the life of his second wife, Marilyn, from childhood to the afterlife, is connected with her adolescence, although the imagery is mostly of the sea, in all its aspects, seen up close and from afar, surface reflecting light and sandy bottom visible. Knowing that marilyn will probably outlive him, Brakhage places her life in the context of eternity, with the changing sea as a contemplative metaphor for the shifts in consciousness in a human´s lifetime, and for the larger source and destination of all life, nature. A blinking light on a hillside early in the film is echoed near the end by a volleyball against the sky, the players almost invisible, signs of narratives we cannot fully konw, and of human transience.
