"Human beings, towels and umbrellas, strewn across the beach like multicoloured confetti. Sunlight, water and the small triangles of sail boats, seen through dense clusters of frangipans and a garden alive with morning glories. Palm Beach, like a suntanned woman with a giant hibiscus in her hair. Postcards from Paradise, or paintings by Ken Done.
Over the last five or six years, most of us have become aware of Ken Done through his graphic designs on T-shirts, calendars, cups, notebooks and cards. Swift impressions of Sidney Harbour that had a feeling of freshness, as if there was a wind about to blow some of the lines away so that they could re-group and re-settle somewhere else. Light-hearted, wry, hip and fun, they splashed themselves across the surface of our domestic lives at an ever-increasing tempo, until they became emblematic of a new self-image: Australia in the 1980's". -Elizabeth Butel
