From Brakhage's eight-part, autobiographical sincerity and Duplicity cycle (1973-80), this work centers around an amateur theatrical pageant, or pageants, performed by children. Near the opening, we see kids putting on makeup, dressing in slightly absurd costumes, and performing, and these images place some of the more characteristically abstracted Brakhage imagery that follows -such as children walking in slow motion and black-and-white negative- in a new and disturbing context, possibly suggesting that all of Brakhage´s techniques are "duplicitous" illusions, public acts of make-believe. It is to his great credit that this artist, who was not modest in his view of his achievements, could here question the honesty of his work.
