Many consider this Brakhage´s masterpiece, though for some, certain later films are even greater. The parts can also be viewed individually. The prelude has two layers of superimposed imagery, and parts two, three, and four have two, three, and four layers, respectively. The film also exists in a longer version, the four-hour "The Art of Vision", which includes the five parts of "Dog Star Man" along with every possible combination of the superimpositions of each part.
Unemployed and living in his wife´s ´ parent´s home, Brakhage had asked them what he could do, and they suggested that he cut wood. He did so, and also depicts himself here as a woodsman, chopping logs, trying to climb a mountain, wrestling with a dead tree. The film´s dense montage and layering of images place the "Dog Star Man" in the context of cells and the sun and stars, the immediate present and Western culture. Part two refers to family history, and part three is a sexual daydream. Haunted by a sense of failure, the film ends in a cosmic deconstruction.
