Cecil Collins celebrated his 80th birthday in 1988. He makes paintings and drawings as objects for contemplation and believes that the subject matter in his work is of vital importance because the main function of art is to free man from the pettiness od daily life and to restore to him "the deepest experience of reality". To this end Collins uses archetypal images such as the Fool, who represents wit, compassion, energy, and our child-like innocence; the Angel, who serves as a guardian, or messenger between the heavenly and earthly kingdoms; Sibyls and Priestesses, who warm us, perform rituals and maintain traditions.
This record of sixty years of artistic activity and the first major retrospective for 30 years, includes an essay on the artist's life and work, a chronology, and comments by the artist about his work.
