To grasp the function of the "Orient" in Clemente's work, we must peer into the fertile wombof his imagination. Indeed, Clemente's Orient comprises more than one isolated theme in his extremely diverse porfolio. It helps us unlock the meaning of not just the limbs, but of the body of his work as a whole.
Clemente's approach could not be more remote from the colonialist and orientalist artistic traditions established in the 19th century. In fact, it may be that the very Orient he depicts spares him from getting caught in a tangled web of historical and academic precedent. Clemente's Orient takes up the role of the now defunct avant-garde. Although he abides by Western tradition in employing the Orient as a metaphor for the elusive und unattainable, he does not burden it with nuances of mystery or ultimate truth.
