Almost any painting by Jeffery Camp is a compendium of what he has seen, noticed, composed, modified and transformed freely. He avoids what he calls "optical" painting, the depiction of just what's there to be painted, for he believes in the freedom of the painter to create with imagination. That may sound obvious: it is, after all, what artists down the ages have done. But latterly there have been insidious and powerful pressures to reduce painting to a set of terminal recipes. Paint a blank; paint a contradiction in terms; paint a deconstruction or appropriation of visual conventions; the orders come pat, the issues, so-called, are advanced and dealt with. And those who look for an alternative tend to fall into the expressionist trap, painting blind, relying on heavy outline and brash infill. [...]
