Eighty years ago Emily Carr spent the late spring and summer in France. Although it was a brief period, her painting style was profoundly changed by the lessons she took with John Duncan Fergusson, Frances Hodgkins and, above all, Phelan Gibb. The eighteen months which she spent in France gave her the tools and the confidence with which to pursue her life's task - expressing her profound regard for the art of the indigenous peoples and her love of the landscape of British Columbia.
The Vancouver Art Gallery, through the Emily Carr Trust, has the most important collectionn of Carr's work but through a quirk of fate, we do not own any of her French works. As our understanding of Carr's work grows the importance of her introduction to modernist art has become clear. [...]
