[...] Ola Billgren is one of the most articulate contemporary Swedish painters when it comes to expressing his thoughts on the conditions, possibilities and limitations of art, and it is not hard to imagine the attraction that the picture of the prison concert must have held for him. Art, at its best, establishes a zone of freedom not to be found anywhere else.Here, this sense of freedom is contrasted with the prisoners in their boxes, under order to experience the freedom of music in their captivity. Behind the dry matter-of-act quality of the xylograph there is a powerful confrontation between repression and its opposite. What 19th century man saw a newspaper picture from a prison is, to the careful observer of today, an outrageous description of the condition of art in a society proud of acknowledging freedom in its various guises.
