Peter Blake is the most British of artists: his feelings, subjects and types are all archetypally British. His art takes its place between the high art of the great museums and galleries, the traditional art of the Royal Academy and the mass arts of the public media. But it remains profoundly individual, without parallel either in Britain or abroad. His painting combines a brilliant technique with a strong and attractive ersonality.
Although Peter Blake has been well known ever since he was a student at the Royal College of Art in the fifties, this is the first book about him. Published to acompany the first London retrospective of this work, it includes early work done at art school, images painted in the sixties when he was acclaimed as one of the founders of British Pop Art and a group of works painted in the seventies when he was living in the country. There are also a number of new works which he has prepared especially for the exhibition.
