The term "Unexpressionism", coined by Germano Celant, describes an artistic rejection of the spectacle and showmanship of Neo-Expressionist painting. It refers to the artists who, since 1980, have focused attention on the bogus character of the languages of production and communication. Unexpressionism moves through the desert of "things" -transmitted by television, film, design, and architecture, industry, and technology- where the mirage of image is confused with reality, and the passage between original an copy never ends. Recognizing the strenght of anonymity in media as well as in everyday life, this movement asserts that nothing is fixed, everything is in transit on an eternal voyage through the black hole of "appearances". These processes illuminate the obliteration of the subject, and the unexpressive and meaningless nature of the present-day context. This context is turned into an art object that interrogates and analyzes, investigates and criticizes the contemporary forms of argument and persuasion.
