In 1921, when the internationally renowned artist Balthus was thirteen years old, he illustrated a whimsical tale about a boy who finds and loses a cat. The original edition of this book, "Mitsou: Quarante Images par Baltusz", which has been extremely rare for many years, contained forty ink drawings and a preface in French by Rainer Maria Rilke. The drawings are reproduced in this delightful volume in facsimile size, accompanied by Rilke's preface, together with an English translation by Richard Miller. Also included a bibliographical note about the original edition, a copy of which is in the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
