There is a quality about Baertling's painting that is both magnificent and astonishing. Even people who are not really at all interested in abstract and modern art in general can pick out one of Baertling's canvasses from a host of non-figurative paintings. There is no doubting the simple clarity of his original genius. Great demands are made by the forceful simplicity of his method, by which the surface is composed of only two or three sharply delineated plains. It is hard to think of any other forms of expression where an extremely pictural sensibility plays the part Baertling's does in this painting so utterly devoid of palliatives and obscurity. A fraction of an inch either way with these surfaces and the picture would die.
