Jean-Michel Basquiat had numerous exhibitions in the United States, Europe and Japan throughout his career yet a great deal of his prolific production was never exhibited or documented. More than on-third of the works presented here have never been seen in the United States and many have not been seen at all. This is the first retrospective survey of the artist's work since his death in 1988, and the first organized by an American museum. It offers an occasion to survey the work of one of the best-known artists of his generation and one of only a small number of Hispnic-African-American artists to hace achieved international recognition.
