"Malelade" is a large folio book in a landscape format containing forty-one etchings and texts by Georg Baselitz, printed by hand with the assistance of the Hamburg printer till Verclas. This is a remarkable example of the "artist's book", worthy to be set alongside those of the great twentieth-century masters. "Malelade" was inspired by an encyclopaedia article on a fourth century codex well known to art historians, the "Physiologus of Smyrna". What matters here is what Baselitz knew when he started work: that the codex is a book consisting of plates, and that the Physiologus combines pictures and texts in a didactic account of an overriding theme.
