"In the garden", by contemporary artist Jennifer Bartlett, is a series of almost two hundred works on paper devoted to a single theme: the garden of a villa seh occupied in the south of France. Like Monet and Giverny, Bartlett depicts the garden and its simple elements- a pool, a statue at the pool's edge, and a border of cypresses- not once but scores of times, creating in the words of critic John Russell, "a concise encyclopedia in which a given scene, itself of no interest whatever, is made to spell out a vast repertory of expression".
