The present volume is the first in the series called "The documents of modern art". By documents is meant source [testua galdua] restricted to writing by artists or by writers who have had that intimate contact with artists which amounts to collaboration.
By modern is meant that art which is universal in character, concerned with the basic needs and desires of all men, not with merely recording a particular locality, and which, by its assimilation of the ideas and morphology of the 20th century, is the expression of our own historical epoch.
The series is aimed primarily at the young painter who needs his material in English. Modern art is the experession of a felt attitude toward reality which is complex, but not arbitrary in origin, being the response of sensitive minds to a highly organized, property-loving world. Only when this attitude is understood, and being understood, is felt, can the young artist contribute to modern art.
